Abstract

Purpose: This is a descriptive study examining the relationship between nurse managers¡¯ facilitative communication as perceived by nurses and nurses¡¯ organizational commitment, job satisfaction and empowerment.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 298 staff nurses at K Hospital of C University in Seoul. Collected data was analyzed using the SAS program through t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression.

Results: Nurses¡¯ organizational commitment and job satisfaction were higher under nurse managers perceived as facilitative communicators. There was a positive correlation between nurse managers¡¯ facilitative communication and nurses¡¯ organizational commitment; nurses¡¯ organizational commitment, job satisfaction and empowerment likewise had a positive correlation. As to major factors affecting nurses¡¯ organizational commitment, job satisfaction showed an explanatory power of 42.7%. As to major factors affecting job satisfaction, organizational commitment showed an explanatory power of 42.7%. In addition, as to major factors affecting empowerment, satisfaction with the nursing job showed an explanatory power of 18.2%.

Conclusion: Nurse managers must facilitate communication. Education and training for improving nurse managers¡¯ communication skills are suggested.
